Abstract

In this article we use portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to study the elemental composition of the blue pigments in various medieval works of art from Alto Aragón, trying to distinguish the use of aerinite, azurite, cobalt and even lapis lazuli. The presence of cobalt in ceramics and azurite in paintings has been established. The presence of aerinite, a mineral from Alto Aragón, is suspected in some Gothic paintings, and there is speculation about the use of lapis lazuli.
