Abstract

The series of three carnelian intaglios depicting Venus are 19th-century forgeries, reproducing Roman gemas made during the principate of Titus (79-81 AD), since the iconography of the pieces is similar to that of the reverses of the coinage of Titus and his daughter Julia in the year 79 AD. The engraved gems were probably given to equites who had shown their loyalty to Titus after his accession to the title of Augustus.
