Abstract

These pages detail various historical aspects of the state of the lower monastery of San Juan de la Peña during the late Middle Ages and the 16th century: the economic crisis, the problematic internal situation with abbots almost always absent, mismanagement, the decline in income, and the deterioration of the buildings, especially after the fire of 1494, which caused serious damage. Despite everything, there was a will to remain in the monastery’s unique location. By the mid-16th century, some renovations had begun, especially when a master builder was sent to the monastery to oversee the reforms that were undertaken.
