Abstract
This article is dedicated to a decorative element of Romanesque architecture: chequering, a motif of relief sculpture historically closely linked to Jaca Cathedral and found in several spaces in the medieval monastery of San Juan de la Peña. The study begins by relating this chequerboard pattern with a spiritual heaven, conceived at the time as the Heavenly Jerusalem, and goes on to analyse its specific use in the romanesque church of that monastery.
