Abstract

The Civil War was a turning point in the history of Spain. The large cities were marked by its impact, but rural small towns and villages also played an important role in the conflict. This was the case for Alcubierre, where time seems to have swept away all memory of what happened there. We often see tourism routes which follow in the footsteps of combatants on both sides, recreating battles and offering visits to trenches, bunkers, and various positions. The reality is that, beyond such military manoeuvres, the war profoundly affected these villages. This study aims to deepen our knowledge of these forgotten places, so easily dismissed as time goes by; to investigate how the conflict affected ordinary homes, religious and institutional buildings and so on; and to shine a light on the cultural and historic heritage which may be hidden in small towns and villages and which often goes unnoticed.
