Abstract

A certain amount of money was left by Ana Santapáu in her last will in order to promote a monastery for Carmelite nuns in Huesca. In 1622 the monastery was ready for some nuns to live in, including the founder and a nephew of her. In 1633 the convent changed its place to another, near the old church of San Miguel, and from this moment on, those nuns were commonly known as miguelas. The new nunnery was built thanks to Jerónimo Ribera, canon, and his legacy and support. The town council was a constant supporter for the first convent and the second one. Since 17th century to the present times, the city has gone on keeping watch over the monastery, taking part in the restoration of 1980-1982. Since then, every Saint Michael’s feast, a ceremony called del céntimo makes present this convent in the city, where there is a street called Pasaje de las Miguelas.
